Angela's Angle - 10/19

Oct. 19, 2010

This is the first in a series of season-long blog entries by junior guard Angela Puleo. A native of Maryville, Tenn., Puleo is in her first year playing with the Commodores after having to sit out last year due to NCAA transfer rules.

Well, you can mark it down. The 2011 season has officially begun… well practice that is. Friday we had our first official team practice. This year is extra, extra exciting for me because after a long year of sitting out (due to transfer rules) I will be able to play this year! It has been entirely too long since I have put on a uniform and I can’t wait for the first time I put on a Vanderbilt one.

Our team is very excited to get on the floor and start putting the pieces together for a great season. We are a very young team so being able to build trust and chemistry in practice is extremely important for us, and I believe we are off to a great start. A great quote that one of my middle school coaches used to tell us was that, "basketball is a marathon not a sprint," and that is something that I always try to keep in mind. Right now with these first few practices behind us, we are getting ready for the marathon that is ahead of us. It is not how we start the race, but how we finish it. I am confident that if we continue to get better in practice we will be more than ready for the race in March.

After a hard two days of practice, we decided to have a team dinner. We all got together and “Mama Beccs" (Rebecca Silinski) cooked dinner for us. We all ate together and told some great stories from past and present times. It was nice to spend some time with everyone… not just between the lines. Even with just three days of practice, I can already tell this is a special group of young ladies. It is not just about the points you make or the amount of steals you end up swiping. It is about forming lasting relationships and working hard for your teammates. I believe with this Vandy women’s team, we will all work hard for each other and our coaches to reach our goals. It’s a great way to start our 2011 journey.

Go ‘Dores!
