White's Commodores to play in Paradise Jam Nov. 23-25

July 19, 2017

ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands -- For the first time in program history, the Commodore women's basketball team will participate in the 2017 Paradise Jam, one of college basketball's premier holiday tournaments.

The Commodores under second-year head coach Stephanie White will open Paradise Jam against George Washington University on Thursday, Nov. 23. Vanderbilt also will face Syracuse on Nov. 24 and Wisconsin on Nov. 25, in the round-robin format, which will be played at the Sports and Fitness Center, located on the University of the Virgin Islands campus.

Paradise Jam will mark Vanderbilt's first regular-season game away from the continental United States since 2012 when the Commodores participated in the Puerto Rico Shootout in San Juan.

The tournament will feature eight women's squads separated into two divisions. Vanderbilt, George Washington, Syracuse and Wisconsin will compete in the Reef Division. Butler, West Virginia, Drexel and Virginia Tech will oppose each other in the Island Division.

White is excited about the opportunity to travel with the Commodores to the Caribbean for the Thanksgiving weekend competition.

"I'm very excited for our players to get a chance to participate in Paradise Jam and have this unbelievable experience," White said. "These type of trips provide tremendous team-building opportunities and we want to make the most of this opportunity. At the same time, we will discover a lot about our team by playing three quality opponents on consecutive days."

While this is Vanderbilt's first appearance in St. Thomas, both Syracuse and Wisconsin have previously competed in and won Paradise Jam, which enters its 19th year of women's competition.

Paradise Jam will be the team's second trip outside the U.S. in a four-month stretch. White and the Commodores will travel to Costa Rica in mid-August for a week of training, competition, community service and sightseeing.

Tournament organizers encourage fans to make the trip to St. Thomas for a week of top-flight basketball and fun in the sun. Fans interested in traveling to the 2017 Paradise Jam can visit www.paradisejam.com/travel.
