ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Vanderbilt co-captains Jennifer Risper and Christina Wirth were among those honored Tuesday at the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Awards Luncheon presented by State Farm and Jostens.
Risper was recognized as the WBCA National Defensive Player of the Year as the best defensive collegiate Division I women's basketball player. The 5-9 senior from Moreno Valley, Calif., helped the Commodores lead the Southeastern Conference in both steals and turnover margin this season as Vanderbilt won its sixth SEC Tournament championship.
Wirth was honored as a WBCA Scholarship Award recipient. The Mesa, Ariz., native excelled on the court as well as in the classroom, scoring 16.6 points per game while boasting a 4.0 GPA in her first semester of graduates studies at the Vanderbilt School of Nursing. Wirth averaged 25.0 points per game in the NCAA Tournament as the Commodores advanced to the Sweet 16 for the 14th time in school history.
Tuesday's banquet was held at the Hyatt Regency St. Louis Riverfront. The awards program was emceed by Debbie Antonelli and Beth Mowins, the highly-respected announcing tandem behind the weekly "Shootaround with Beth & Debbie" women's basketball podcasts.
The entire Vanderbilt coaching staff joined Risper and Wirth at Tuesday's event, held in conjunction with the 2009 WBCA National Convention and the NCAA Women's Final Four.
