COMMODORE INSIDER PODCAST: WEBB & SPEARS
For Marqu’es Webb, the path to professional basketball might begin this week in Dallas, Texas.
The senior from Montgomery, Ala., is traveling to the Lone Star state to participate in the ProHoops Combine on Saturday at SMU.
The combine is an invitation-only event that provides an opportunity for many of the nation’s top college seniors to be evaluated by coaches, agents and general managers from the WNBA and from overseas.
“This is a great chance for me to show what I’m about,” said Webb, who recently completed an outstanding career at Vanderbilt. “I am super excited about going.”
Webb, who compiled 875 points and 703 rebounds in her four seasons with the Commodores, is hoping to catch the eye of a professional team – and frankly, she doesn’t much care where the team is located. She said she believes that playing overseas is a realistic, viable goal.
“No matter what, this is just a great opportunity for me,” she said. “So, I am just going to go out there and do me. I am going to stick with what I know and not try to reinvent myself in one day.
“I’m not going to try to turn myself into a point guard,” she added with a laugh.
Webb plans to attend the women’s Final Four and the championship game while she is in Dallas.
“That’s going to be a blast,” she said, noting that she has played travel ball with some of the South Carolina players, and was once roommates with South Carolina star A’ja Wilson when they were both in high school.
