2011-12 Women's Basketball Photos of the Year | Photos of the Year Part One

During the course of each season, there are those moments that stand out. Today, we conclude a two-part look at some of those moments from this year's Vanderbilt women's basketball team through the lenses of Vanderbilt University photographers Joe Howell, John Russell and Daniel Dubois.

Some of the photos help tell the story of the season, while others are simply those lucky moments in the game where a photographer captured a moment hardly noticeable to the naked eye. Whatever the case, takes you back through the 2011-12 season with women's basketball photos of the year.

After losing three-straight, things began to turnaround for the Commodores when No. 17/15 Georgia visited Memorial. Foggie poured in a career-high 34 points against the Lady Bulldogs, powering Vanderbilt to a 68-48 win. After the game, Head Coach Melanie Balcomb called it, "one of the best performances I've seen here."

While Schrann made things look easy in that contest, Holzer fought her way to 18 points and 15 rebounds. The physical play in the post evidenced by this photo of LSU's LaSondra Barrett's post defense on Holzer.

In perhaps the best photo of the year, Schrann can be seen right below the hoop as she and Tennessee's Glory Johnson wait anxiously to see if a shot drops or comes down for a rebound.

The contest with the 11th-ranked Lady Vols provided more than just some great photos, but also some great highlights as the Commodores took a 93-79 win, scoring the most points ever for a Vanderbilt team in the series. Lister, seen here celebrating with Smith, dished out a career-high 13 assists while adding 19 points of her own for her first career double-double in the win.

A crowd of 12,034 came out for the game, including nearly 1,000 Vanderbilt students, creating one of the best atmosphere's Balcomb had ever seen. "In my 10 years at Vanderbilt, `Memorial Magic' has never been better than it was (that) night."

Memorial Magic struck again on Feb. 16 when Florida visited West End. In a game that included nine ties, the most important one came at the end of regulation when the Commodores were down, 65-62, and Foggie banked in a three-pointer at the buzzer to send the contest to overtime. The Commodores went on to win 75-69, clinching Vanderbilt's 13th-straight 20-win season.

When Vanderbilt hosted Alabama for the final game of the regular season, it provided an opportunity for the team to recognize its lone senior, Jordan Coleman. Coleman also took the opportunity to thank the fans for support as her proud parents, Marcella and Kurt, looked on.

Another one of those great moments only the camera can capture came when Vanderbilt traveled the 2.5 miles down West End Avenue to Bridgestone Arena for the SEC Tournament. In a first round win over Mississippi State, Lister was whistled for a foul, but the sophomore was obviously a little surprised. In spite of the foul on Lister, the Commodores defeated Mississippi State, 67-51.

Then NCAA Tournament then came to Memorial for the first time since 2006, but the first round opponent for Vanderbilt did not have to travel far. The selection committee sent 10th-seeded Middle Tennessee to Nashville for the first meeting with seventh-seeded Vanderbilt since January 30, 1992. The Commodores prevailed, 60-46, behind 19 points from Jasmine Lister, before falling to second-seeded Duke in the second round.
