WBCA Release

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga.– Vanderbilt assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Joy Cheek has been awarded the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Thirty Under 30 award. The award is given to 30 of the up-and-coming women’s basketball coaches age 30 and under across all levels of the sport.

“We are so proud of Joy,” said Vanderbilt head coach Stephanie White. “She is the consummate professional, a student of the game and a rising star in our profession. We are grateful for the impact she makes daily on our program.”

“The WBCA is pleased to recognize up-and-coming talent in our coaching family. The 30 coaches who have been named to receive the Thirty Under 30 Award are deserving of this recognition, and the WBCA congratulates them for distinguishing themselves early in their careers,” said WBCA Executive Director Danielle Donehew. “These coaches have demonstrated eagerness, effectiveness, loyalty, love of the game, and a commitment to the student-athlete. We celebrate their effort on the basketball court as teachers and equally applaud the extensive role they play in impacting the lives of their student-athletes.”

“2018 has become known as the ‘year of the woman’ and Marriott is thrilled to recognize 30 highly talented coaches who have also been outstanding members of their communities,” said Kieran Donahue, vice president, brand, marketing and digital, Marriott International, Americas. “As we continue the second year as the Official Hotel Partner of NCAA, we are incredibly proud of the accomplishments and bright futures of these exceptional female coaches.”

Each recipient has exemplified their involvement in community service, mentorship and impact on others, professional manner and attitude and professional association involvement. Cheek becomes the second SEC women’s basketball assistant coach to earn the honor in the three years of the recognition.

Cheek, a 1,000 point-scorer at Duke and a 2010 WNBA draft pick, is an inaugural member of White’s staff and has an instrumental recruiting asset for the Commodores. Each of Vanderbilt’s last two classes have been ranked in the top 20, including a two-member class ranked No. 18 this fall. Cheek works with Vanderbilt’s post players and has seen tremendous improvement from this group in two seasons. Under the tutelage of Cheek, freshman Autumn Newby led the team in rebounding with 6.6 rebounds per game this season.
