Team asks fans to help VU Children's Hospital

Jan. 11, 2013

When VUCommodores.com ran a feature on the volunteer work of senior women's basketball player Gabby Smith at the Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt, many fans began asking how they can help.

Read the story here.

Starting with this Sunday's 2:00 p.m. showdown with Arkansas, fans will have the opportunity to do just that.

Over the past several seasons, the team's senior class has picked a cause near and dear to its heart to raise awareness at their final home game. Through Smith's volunteer work, that project is going to be expanded to all of the remaining home games.

The team is asking fans to bring select items to its remaining home games and drop them in collection boxes at all the entrances to Memorial Gym. The team will accept donations of:

- Crayloa Crayons (packs of eight)
- Small Legos (individual sets or large containers of small bricks)
- Picture Books (hard-bound board books for ages five-and-under)
- Play-Doh
- Infant toys with lights and sounds
- Thomas the Train toys for train table
- I-Spy Books
- UNO Cards
- Individual crafts kits

In addition to boxes at each entrance of Memorial Gym for all remaining home games, a collection box will be located at the McGugin Ticket Office starting Monday, January 14.
