The No. 24/21 Vanderbilt women's basketball team (12-1, 0-0 SEC) travels to Columbia, S.C., to open Southeastern Conference play versus South Carolina (12-2, 1-0 SEC). The game can be heard in Middle Tennessee on WNSR 560 AM and as part of Vanderbilt All-Access on VUCommodores.com.
Scouting the Commodores
Vanderbilt stands at 12-1 entering SEC play, following an 81-36 victory over Western Carolina in its final non-conference game of the season. The Commodores were led in the contest by 27 points from sophomore guard Christina Foggie. She added five rebounds and is averaging a team-high 17.7 ppg. Freshman guard Kady Schrann posted career highs in points (20), assists (six) and blocks (three) versus the Catamounts and is averaging 8.6 points per game. Vanderbilt also receives 12.9 ppg from Jasmine Lister and 12.2 ppg from Stephanie Holzer. Lister is currently 18th in the nation in assists per contest (5.8), while Holzer is averaging 7.4 rebounds per game, which is sixth in the SEC. The Commodores are also receiving 9.8 points and 7.0 rebounds per game from Preseason All-SEC selection Tiffany Clarke.
Scouting the Gamecocks
South Carolina hosts Vanderbilt with a 12-2 mark, 1-0 in SEC play. The Gamecocks defeated Alabama, 68-42, at home in their league opener. Just like the Commodores, one of their defeats came on the road at NC State (55-53), with the other coming to No. 11/12 Penn State at home. The highlight of the year thus far for Dawn Staley's squad is a 79-48 win over No. 18/16 North Carolina. Markeshia Grant leads the Gamecocks in scoring at 10.9 ppg. They also get 8.3 ppg from La'Keisha Sutton, 8.1 ppg from Aleighsa Welch and 8.0 ppg from Ashley Bruner. Defense has been the story of the year for South Carolina, as they have not allowed more than 58 points in any game this season, including holding two ranked opponents to 55 (Penn State) and 48 points (North Carolina).
Vanderbilt vs. South Carolina - The Series
The Commodores have posted a 20-6 mark against the Gamecocks, including a 7-4 mark in Columbia, S.C. The first meeting came in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at Memorial Gym, with Vanderbilt taking a 73-64 win en route to a Sweet 16 appearance. The programs first met as conference foes in the 1991-92 season, with the Gamecocks taking a win in Columbia before Vanderbilt got revenge in the SEC Tournament. The teams have played every season since with two meetings in 1991-92, 1997-98, 1999-2000, 2005-06 and 2006-07. Last year, Vanderbilt took a 74-60 overtime win in Columbia. The Commodores were down 10 and rallied to send it into overtime, where they outscored the Gamecocks 18-4. Stephanie Holzer led the way with 19 points and six rebounds. Elan Brownhad 12 points and eight boards. La'Keisha Sutton led the way for South Carolina with 20 points. The teams meet again this season at Memorial Gym on January 22.
The Commodores host an SEC foe for the first time this season when Ole Miss visits Memorial Gym on Sunday, January 8. Tipoff versus the Rebels is set for 2:00 p.m. Following the game, Vanderbilt players will host the first of three mini-clinics and autograph sessions this season.
