NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- A smothering defense and five players scoring in double-figures helped the Vanderbilt women's basketball team defeat South Carolina, 78-48, Thursday at Memorial Gymnasium.

The Commodores scored 40 points in the paint and scored 25 points off of USC turnovers. Sophomore Merideth Marsh led five Commodores in double-figures with 12 points. The balanced attack also saw 11 points each from junior Jennifer Risper and sophomores Lauren Lueders and Jessica Mooney, as well as 10 points from junior Christina Wirth.

Vanderbilt shot 50 percent from the field while holding the Gamecocks to just over 30 percent. The Commodores also continued their outstanding three-point defense, holding USC to 4 three-polnters on 14 attempts.

The Commodores opened a 37-14 lead at halftime after a 13-0 run midway through the opening period. The Gamecocks would get no closer than 21 in the second half.

Vanderbilt travels to Tuscaloosa on Sunday to face Alabama for a 2 p.m. CT tip-off.
