Vanderbilt-South Carolina Postgame Quotes

Recap |  Box Score |  Notes

Vanderbilt head coach Melanie Balcomb

On their lack of 3-pointers...
"I have to credit South Carolina in taking the 3-point shots away from us.  That's what they are good at in this conference and that's what they did."

On South Carolina's game...
"South Carolina did a great job, they stayed disciplined on our personnel for 40 minutes and I don't think we did that as well as them."

On Christina Foggie and Jasmine Lister cramping up...
"I think it's important that the team realizes that even when Foggie is out or Jas is out, they can still score.  They may be our first option but they certainly are not our only option."

On South Carolina's defense on Jasmine Lister...
"I thought they did a great job trailing Jas, sticking with her and not giving her enough open looks. They really used their size advantage on Jas to take her out of being able to make those big plays."

Vanderbilt guard Christina Foggie

On the lack of 3-point attempt opportunities...
"They chased a lot off screens so that we couldn't get open or fade. I think it was just a matter of reading what they were doing better. They kept on chasing us so that we couldn't spot up for threes."

On the last minute of the game...
"We definitely believe we were in a really good spot tied with less than a minute left. We talked about how we need to dig down and play smarter in that last possession where we left an open layup. That's just where we need to get better as a team."

On how this loss affects the outlook on the season...
"It's definitely a frustrating loss, but we still had a lot of positives in the game. We played pretty tough for the whole game. So we will watch the film and keep moving on to the next game. We still played very, very tough, a lot of effort in this game. There's definitely still a lot of positives to come from this game."

Vanderbilt guard Jasmine Lister

On the tight defense played on her...
"It wasn't really affecting me. They weren't really letting me get the ball. They had good pressure defense and limited my touches. They did do a good job, and I just tried to take advantage when I had the ball and create for my teammates as well."

South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley

On a late timeout call...
"We called a timeout to make sure that we had the right people shooting the ball. We want the ball in Tiffany Mitchell's hands or (Aleighsa) Welch, and I thought both of them came through at a time when we needed a bucket. They made me look good."

On scoring from the post...
"I think that's high-percentage basketball. We want to go down to our bigs on the block and I thought Vandy did a good job with pushing us off the block. Either we want to get on the block or use our athleticism from the perimeter to drive into the paint because we feel like it's high-percentage basketball and I felt like our advantage would be to not shoot outside shots and [instead] take that ball to the paint."

On forcing Vandy to play the post...
"Vandy's a team that thrives when they are able to shoot 3-point shots, so one of our keys was not to allow them to 3 us. If they are able to get off more 3-point shots or makes, they win this basketball game, so kudos to our kids for buying into our game plan and executing it to a tee."
