Quick Slant: Hall of Fame class announced Monday

July 19, 2013

Quick Slant is an array of brief insights and occasionally opinionated overviews of collegiate athletics in general and the Vanderbilt Commodores in particular.

Our Soccer/Lacrosse Complex will feature a new LED video board this fall, an excellent addition for the up and coming soccer program. The team's first contest is an August 11 exhibition with Louisville, which immediately follows the annual Gary Force Acura Dore Jam activities held on the adjacent football practice field from 3-5 p.m. Admission to the soccer exhibition will be free of charge so football fans are encouraged to come over and enjoy some quality college soccer.

Single game football tickets for the August 29 Ole Miss game and all of Vanderbilt's non-conference games go on sale August 1. Other home SEC games will go on sale at a later date.

We are looking forward to Monday afternoon's press conference to announce our 2013 Hall of Fame class. The Hall of Fame Weekend is scheduled during our first home Saturday football game, which this year is Austin Peay. The Hall of Fame Induction Dinner is Friday evening, Sept. 6.

Sports Illustrated is sending one of its top writers to campus next week as it works on an upcoming feature on the "smart schools." Long thought a nearly impossible task, much has been said about relatively recent gridiron success of academic schools such as Stanford, Northwestern and Vanderbilt to name several.

The men's golf team has momentum. Junior Hunter Stewart just won the prestigious 14th Player's Amateur by shooting 14-under over 54 holes, beating a first-rate field that included two first-team All-Americans. The big prize with the win is an automatic berth in next year's RBC Heritage, a PGA Tour event that takes place at the Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head, S.C.

Feedback on our new web site design has been very positive. Most like the clean, open look and its use of high quality photography, which originates from a team of exceptional Vanderbilt staff photographers headed by John Russell and Joe Howell.
