Quick Slant: Successful spring season

April 3, 2014

Quick Slant is an array of brief insights and occasionally opinionated overviews of collegiate athletics in general and the Vanderbilt Commodores in particular.

For those readers who may have missed these story lines, a Quick recap: our two golf teams are both rated 11th nationally, a combined all-time best; the women's tennis team is ranked 8th and tied for the SEC lead (and has defeated the two teams its tied with) heading into the final three matches of the regular season; the lacrosse team defeated previously unbeaten Johns Hopkins last Sunday. The baseball team, as most know, is ranked in the Top 10 as a tight SEC pennant race unfolds. Our bowlers are in the field of eight at next week's NCAA Championship.

Department of possible overkill: For those planning to renew or purchase football season tickets, April 13 is a key date. Act before then and you see a price break along with some fun incentives.

Joe Fisher, who was voted Tennessee's Broadcaster of the Year a few months back, has a special knack for describing baseball. He walks into his broadcast booth atop Hawkins Field and for the next few hours paints an audio picture so vivid that those listening as they drive down the highway feel they are in The Hawk watching in person.

The SEC Men's Tennis Championship is being played on our courts April 16-20. When it's an SEC Championship, it is going to be competitive and played at a very high level.

Admission is free, a real bargain for the tennis buff or sports fan.
