Quick Slant is an array of brief insights and occasionally opinionated overviews of collegiate athletics in general and the Vanderbilt Commodores in particular.
The past weekend produced tournament championships for both of our golf teams, possibly the first time in our history that we won two trophies the same week. It is yet further evidence that Vanderbilt golf has crossed into a new frontier of excellence. Both teams are highly ranked - the men 14th and the women 12th; both are dominated by underclassmen and both have outstanding freshmen. For local readers, the men are hosting the Mason Rudolph Championship at Vanderbilt Legends Club April 4-6. Admission is free and you will be very impressed with the golf you see played by some of the nation’s best college teams, including defending NCAA champion Alabama.
It can seem as though we live in a world of deadlines and here’s yet another reminder for football fans. If you plan to purchase season tickets, whether renewing or for the first time, get it done before April 13 to get a nice price reduction and qualify for some incentives. We need not remind you that this is a program coming off 18 wins, two bowl championships the last two years and hungry for more!
Every once in a while, we are still amazed at how strong the pressure to win on the field of play must be at some places when coaching hirings and firings are announced. Are these bold, crafty administrative moves or further evidence that darn near anything can be rationalized?
The April issue of Commodore Nation is heading to the printer and it contains some very interesting features. Pay attention when it hits your mailbox. If you are not an NCC member, you are missing out on this.
Can you believe this timing? The cable went out in McGugin Center sometime Wednesday and on the first day of March Madness every screen in the building is blank while the crew works to fix it! What are the odds? No doubt it will be back on in time to watch a rerun of House Hunters International.
