Quick Slant: Spotlight on season opener

March 8, 2013

Quick Slant is an array of brief insights and occasionally opinionated overviews of collegiate athletics in general and the Vanderbilt Commodores in particular.

Tennessean writer Jeff Lockridge filed a good report with insight from David Williams and college football analyst Rod Gilmore after ESPN picked up our Ole Miss game and moved it to Thursday night, August 29. The 8:15 kick might seem a tad late to some but remember it’s the eve of the Labor Day weekend and allows plenty of time after work for tailgating, Star Walk and Vandyville.

We heard the good news that former women’s basketball head coach Jim Foster will be inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame June 8. Foster, who led our 1993 team to the Final Four, compiled a 256-99 record from 1991-2002, which until Melanie Balcomb notched her 257th win a week ago had been our school record.

Jeff Turner, who won Olympic Gold in 1984
before moving on to the NBA, now coaches Lake Highland High (Orlando), which recently won Florida’s 4A title.

Legendary Vanderbilt Hustler editor Chuck Offenburger sends a note that Olympic gold medal gymnast Shawn Johnson, like Chuck a native Iowan, is now shopping for colleges and has Vanderbilt on her short list. Last year there were 28,000 other applicants for the 1,600 spots so let’s wish the Dancing with the Stars winner the best of luck!
