Quick Slant is an array of brief insights and occasionally opinionated overviews of collegiate athletics in general and the Vanderbilt Commodores in particular.
- There are five Commodore teams ranked in the current Top 25 led by baseball at No. 5. Others are women's golf and lacrosse (11), bowling (12) and men's basketball (22).
- The Suggestion Box to get your ideas to improve our football operations has been overflowing. Submissions, some containing several ideas, are pouring in - 91 as of Jan. 5 and climbing! Here's how they are being handled: each and every one is being placed in a binder, categorized by topic. Several senior managers are reading each and every one. The best will be seriously considered at special meetings. One such review will come at an upcoming retreat in which some of the authors of the most intriguing suggestions will be invited to personally attend and contribute.
- Tom Henderson and Bob Dudley Smith will be inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame on February 11th at the Renaissance Hotel here in Nashville. For tickets, please contact TSHF office (615) 242-4750 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
- Stanford showed that brains and gridiron brawn can mix with its impressive performance in the Orange Bowl. The Cardinal will finish among the nation's Top 5 without the benefit of the largest stadium, gaudiest practice facility or highest-priced coach. The Orange Bowl also allowed the university to showcase some of its star power to a national audience. Stanford dignitaries at the game included Condoleezza Rice, Sandra Day O'Connor, former Heisman winner Jim Plunkett and NFL legend John Elway. And the team's 12 wins did nothing to lessen the school's lofty academic rank or cheapen the diplomas of its alumni.
