With half of their team in California, the younger members of the men's tennis team opened their fall play at the Southern Intercollegiate Classic in Athens, Georgia, gaining valuable experience in their first tournament.
Suresh Eswaran and Jeff Offerdahl each played well in their groupings, with both making it into the quarterfinals for his division. Offerdahl and Joe Dorn played in the Division II singles group, with Dorn beating his opponent in the round of 64 before losing to Hunter Koontz of Virginia Tech on Saturday.
Michael Retta lost his first singles match on Friday to Minnesota's Eric Frueh, 7-5, 6-2, but went on to win both of his consolation round matches. Retta paired up with Eswaran for doubles play at the tournament, winning by walkover in their first match before losing to partners from Winthrop.
"As a coach and a competitor I want to have my guys playing on the last day of the tournament competing for championships," said assistant coach Jamie Hunt, who traveled to Georgia with the freshmen. "Unfortunately, we aren't at that point yet but we are doing the right things so we will get there. There were quite a few positives from the weekend and the guys learned a lot from their losses."
