Austin, Lipman set for NCAA Championships

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The 2014 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Singles and Doubles Championship brackets have been released and both Ryan Lipman and Gonzales Austinof the No. 19 Vanderbilt men's tennis team are set to open play Wednesday. The first round of singles action begins Wednesday, May 21 with doubles starting up on Thursday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex at the University of Georgia.
Gonzales Austin, currently ranked No. 21 by the ITA, will begin his NCAA Championship first round play at 9 a.m. (ET) against 37th-ranked Leonard Stakhovsky of Penn State. This is the second straight season Austin has earned a bid to the NCAA Singles Championship, falling last year in the first round.
A potential rematch is lined up for the second round as Austin could face No. 17 Winston Lin of Columbia, who opens his first round play against No. 43 Nick Chappell of TCU. Lin and Austin met in the NCAA regional final at the No. 1 position, with Lin coming out on top in three-sets to send the Lions to their first ever NCAA Sweet 16.
Ryan Lipman, currently ranked No. 59 by the ITA, opens his first round action at 5 p.m. (ET) against 10th-ranked Yannick Hanfmann of Southern California. This marks the fourth time Lipman has been selected to the NCAA Singles Championship, and will be the third time he has competed. The Nashville native has twice made it to the second round of the singles draw (2013, 2010).
Hanfmann and the Trojans will play for the 2014 National Championship against Oklahoma today at 5 p.m. (ET).
In the doubles draw Lipman and Austin were selected at the No. 3 national seed (ranked No. 4 by the ITA) and will open play on Thursday against 11th-ranked Chappell and Will Stein of TCU.
In a potential round of 16 match the Commodore pair could face Mississippi State's Jordan Angus and Malte Stropp. Austin and Lipman have faced the MSU duo twice this season, pulling out wins in both matches by scores of 8-7 (9) and 8-6, respectively.
Lipman and Austin are just the first doubles team to represent Vanderbilt in the NCAA draw since 2005. Of the seven teams to qualify, no Commodore pairing has ever made it though the first round of the NCAA Doubles Championship.
