Day 4 Quotes
No. 2 Texas A&M 4, No. 4 Florida 2
Texas A&M Head Coach Steve Denton
On the match:
"I was really, really proud of how our guys played today. We played well in the doubles, that's something we've been able to do this whole weekend, and then our guys competed really hard there in the singles, didn't give up any free points. We didn't win the regular season, we were disappointed. We had a chance to do that, had it in our own hands. They came in here determined this weekend, we had a second chance. They came here determined to win this SEC Tournament, and they did an unbelievable job."
"Tie-breakers are momentum changers and we were fortunate to win a couple of those in this match. On courts five and six that made a huge difference for us in the outcome. Our guys just stepped up and played big when it counted."
On three wins in three days:
"This is kind of a test for the NCAA tournament, so I felt like, physically, we held up pretty well. Mentally, it's a strain to play games three days in a row. It's been a long season thus far and I know they're tired but they kind of hung in there. They were on some fumes today, but they did a great job finishing for us."
Florida Head Coach Bryan Shelton
On the match:
"I thought Texas A&M came out strong and they got on us in a couple of the doubles, particularly No. 1 and No. 3, and just did a nice job in the key moments of the matches. I felt like they were able to stay the course even when things weren't going their way, especially No. 2 doubles where we were up a break and they hung in there and they were able to battle their way back and that kind of changed the momentum of the doubles for us, especially when our team at No. 1 handled back strongly. That was a tough, tough point to lose there after being up for most of that match in No. 2 doubles."
On responding in singles play:
"In singles play, our guys responded like they always do and came back. We were up in almost every set of the matches from 1-6. We had opportunities on 5 and 6 where we didn't win the set, but overall, I felt like we competed really hard, we just didn't sustain anything long enough to really get the match today. Like I said, all credit goes to Texas A&M; they're a quality team. They're tough, athletic guys that compete really hard so I think they were close to winning the regular season title; I think they fell one match short. Today, they were able to finish it off and you just have to credit their coaching staff and their support staff."
