VU Men Roll Over Tide, 5-2

4/1/2005

The No. 52 Vanderbilt men's tennis team captured its SEC home opener as it dropped the No. 69 Crimson Tide, 5-2 at the Currey Tennis Center on Friday afternoon.

"It couldn't have come a better time after three tough ones on the road," said Interim Head Coach Eddie Coates.  "The guys have been fighting and coming back home gave us an emotional lift.  They guys were in control and we didn't press.  Tonight we finally got the doubles point and that was a huge boost."

The Commodores swept the doubles draw from the Tide, claiming its first SEC doubles point of the season.

The VU tandem of Andy Mack and Nathan Sachs nabbed the first matchup for the Dores with their 8-1 triumph at the No. 3 slot.

The Commodores clinched the doubles point at the first position where Scott Brown and Jason Pinsky outlasted the Crimson Tide combo of Luigi D'Agord and Eric Molnar, 8-6.  The win improves Brown and Pinsky to 12-4, 3-3 SEC.

The Dores also grabbed the showdown at the second position, 9-8.  VU's Jordan Magarik and Ryan Preston claimed an intense, marathon tiebreaker, 13-11 to preserve the doubles sweep.

In the singles draw, the Tide knotted the score at 1-1 with their win at the No. 4 position.  UA's Javier Bes outlasted VU's Sachs, 6-2, 7-5.

The Commodores quickly countered the Crimson Tide win with Preston's "W" at No. 5.  The VU sophomore dismantled UA's Billy Mertz in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1.  The win was Preston's 12th of the 2005 season.

VU's No. 38 Brown earned the Dores their third point of the afternoon with his 6-4, 6-3 showing over Alabama's No. 99 D'Agord.

The Tide soon added their second point of the day at the second slot, where UA's Joseph Jung tripped VU's Lockin in straight sets.

The Commodores clinched the match on the strength of Pinsky's three-set thriller on Court Two.  The Potomac, Md. native dropped the first frame, but fought back to even the match at once set all with a tremendous 7-2 tiebreak win in the second.  Pinsky went on to claim the third set and the match for the Dores, 4-6, 7-6 (2), 6-2.

Vanderbilt sophomore Evan Dufaux capped the match with a 6-4, 6-4 win over R.J. Murray at the sixth position.

The Dores return to face the Auburn Tigers on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at the Currey Tennis Center.
