NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Commodores dropped their first weekend contest 7-0 to No. 21 Arkansas.
The Commodores (5-6, 0-3 SEC) narrowly lost the doubles point, loosing the clinching match in a tiebreaker at the No. 2 spot. Following the loss at No. 3 with Jordan Magarik and Nik Cromydas, #36 duo Andy Mack and Evan Dufaux defeated Arkansas' Gajjar/Roberts at No. 1 (8-6).
"We obviously have a long way to go, but I did see some progress today from last week. I thought doubles looked the best I'd seen it, and we came very close to winning the point which would have given us an advantage," VU Head Coach Ian Duvenhage said.
Arkansas (10-4, 1-2) clinched the win early in the match, going up 4-0 with Nik Cromydas' loss at No. 5 singles (6-3, 4-6). But the Commodores refused to throw in the towel and followed up with close matches at the No. 6, No. 4, and No. 2 singles.
Jordan Magarik was the only the Commodore to play a super-tie breaker, after defeating Michael Jung in the second set 6-3. Magarik fell in the final set 5-10.
At No. 4, Nathan Sachs rallied to overcome a two game deficit to come within one game of Razorback Blake Strode. Sachs was unable to get the edge over Strode and dropped the match 6-4, 6-4.
The last singles contest of the night to wrap up was at No. 2, with VU's Evan Dufaux and UA's Rohan Gajjar. After Gajjar narrowly defeated Dufaux in the first set tiebreaker, Dufaux dropped a close second set 4-6.
"All the guys fit in one of two categories. Some are not playing aggressively enough and we just keep telling them that you never back into great accomplishment, and unless you can be aggressive you can't expect good results," Duvenhage said. "The other half is playing aggressively and they control the point all through the match, we just can't finish it."
The Commodores will continue their four match home stretch with LSU on Sunday at 1 p.m.
