NASHVILLE, Tenn. - After opening up the season on Sunday with wins over Marquette and Belmont, the Vanderbilt men's tennis team jumped one spot to No. 15, in this week's ITA team rankings.
The Commodores picked up a 7-0 win over Marquette in the first of two matches on Sunday. Sophomore Rhys Johnson clinched the match with his win at No. 3 singles. Johnson, the 57th-ranked singles player in the country made his No. 1 singles debut against Belmont, leading the 'Dores to a 6-0 win.
Vanderbilt is one of 12 schools in college tennis with both its men's and women's programs ranked inside the top 25, and one of eight with both programs in the top 16. Four of the schools with both the men's and women's team in the top 16 are out of the Southeastern Conference. The women's tennis team remained ranked No. 16 this week, after a strong performance at the Miami Spring Invitational.
Vandy will host one of 16 ITA Kick-off regional sites this weekend for the "official" college tennis season-opener. The top-seeded Commodores will host three teams in the ITA top 25; second-seed Wake Forest (No. 19), third-seed LSU (No. 23) and fourth-seeded Texas (No. 20).
The 'Dores will face the Longhorns Saturday, January 25 at 10 a.m., with Wake and LSU matching up at 2 p.m.
The winners of each match will meet up Sunday at 2 p.m., with a bid to the National Team Indoor Championship on the line.
