NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The No. 16 Vanderbilt men's tennis team opens its season, Sunday, at the Currey Tennis Center with a doubleheader against Marquette and Belmont. The Commodores will take on the Golden Eagles at noon and the Bruins at 4:30 p.m.
Vandy opens the season with its highest preseason ranking since 2009, when the 'Dores began the year ranked 27th. VU was also recently picked by the coaches of the Southeastern Conference to finish seventh.
Austin enters the spring as one of two Vandy singles players in the national rankings. The junior out of Miami, Fla. begins the year ranked ninth, after going 12-4 in the fall with runs at both the All-American and National Indoor Championships.
The other ranked singles player for the 'Dores is sophomore Rhys Johnson. Johnson, a native of Perth, Australia, will open the year as the 57th-ranked player in the country. He posted a 12-4 fall record and made it to the semifinals of the Ohio Valley Regional Championships.
Following Sunday's doubleheader the Commodores will host the ITA National Kick-off, welcoming three top 25 teams to Nashville. The two-day event will see the Commodores take on Texas, and LSU take on Wake Forest on Saturday, with the winners matching up on Sunday with a chance to go to February's National Indoors on the line.
