The Vanderbilt men's tennis team starts their spring duals matches Wednesday afternoon against the MTSU Blue Raiders.
"We're extremely excited about our first dual match of the season," said assistant coach Jamie Hunt. "Our guys are prepared and ready for the season to start."
It will be a contest of young teams, as both the Commodores and Blue Raiders have six freshmen on their team. Last year, MTSU won the Sun Belt title after finishing their season 13-13. They were 1-7 against nationally ranked teams.
The Commodores are ranked No. 37 in the country in the latest ITA polls.
Senior Charlie Jones, who played well over the fall, including a run at the ITA Men's All American Championships that included three marathon matches of three or more hours each, is ranked 87th in the nation.
Top freshmen recruits Anton Kovrigin, Gonzales Austin, Joe Dorn, Jeff Offerdahl, Michael Retta and Suresh Eswaran will look to find playing time amongst the returning players Jones, Alex DiValerio, Ryan Lipman, and Blake Bazarnik.
Kovrigin saw his first collegiate play this past weekend at the SEC Coaches' Indoor Championships in Lexington, Kentucky, after recovering from injury. According to Hunt and head coach Ian Duvenhage, they liked what they saw.
The match, the first of the spring for both MTSU and Vanderbilt, will be at 2 p.m.
"We look forward to a great match with a quality MTSU opponent," said Hunt.
