Austin, Lipman move on in singles

Lipman will take on the singles No. 1 seed on Sunday for a chance to play in the quarterfinals. Lipman won his third round match versus Tennessee’s Jarryd Chaplin 7-5, 6-4. Lipman began the day with a win in the second round of singles play. The Nashville, Tenn., native defeated Fernando Mussolini from Belmont 6-3, 6-0.
Austin, who is the No. 3 seed, will play in the singles round of 16 Sunday afternoon, after beating Louisville’s Austin Siegel 6-4, 6-3 in the third round. Earlier in the day, Austin needed only two sets to advance to the second round. He defeated Lipscomb’s Colby Shaw 6-4, 6-0.
Rhys Johnson matched up against Connor Glennon of Memphis in the third round for a chance to join Lipman and Austin in the round of 16. However, Glennon had other ideas, as Johnson fell 6-3, 7-6. Johnson took down Josh Maylon of Dayton in the second round 6-1, 6-3.
Sophomore Jeff Offerdahl advanced to the third round where he faced David O’Hare from Memphis. O’Hare downed Offerdahl in two sets 6-0, 6-2. Offerdahl won his second round match versus Thomas Gans from IUPUI 6-4, 6-1.
Freshman Kris Yee was eliminated from singles play after dropping his third round match to Albert Wagner of Louisville 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. Yee made it to the third round after defeating Middle Tennessee State’s Yannick Born 6-4, 6-2.
Michael Retta stayed alive in the consolation bracket as he defeated Dayton’s Devin Jones 6-3, 6-3. Retta will play Jason Jaruvang tomorrow morning at 9 a.m.
Play resumes Sunday morning at 9 a.m. with doubles action.
