Vandy men ousted in doubles competition
Oct. 19, 2012
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Vanderbilt men’s tennis was eliminated from doubles contention at the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional on Friday, at the Racquet Club of Memphis.
Vanderbilt’s doubles teams just couldn’t find a rhythm on Friday, as the Commodores only registered two wins out of five matches.
Johnson and Lipman made quick work of their second round opponent from Chattanooga. Vanderbilt’s duo defeated Ankit Chopra and Roberto Vieira (Chattanooga), 8-3.
Michael Retta and Kris Yee teamed up for doubles competition in the second round and looked to advance to the round of 16. However, David O’Leary and Joe Salisbury from Memphis had other plans. Retta and Yee were knocked out of doubles competition as they fell, 8-2.
After receiving a first round bye, Gonzales Austin and Jeff Offerdahl took to the court against Xavier’s Brandon MacDonald and Zach Mueck. The two teams fought back-and-forth in an incredibly tight match before the Xavier duo won, 8-6.
Retta and Yee began the day with first round doubles action against Devin Jones and Aidan Koross from Dayton, with the Vanderbilt duo pulling away to advance to the second round, 8-5.
Retta was the lone Commodore to begin singles play on Friday as he faced Michael Moe from Xavier in the first round. The two players played a great first set that went down to the wire before Moe won, 7-5. In the second set, Retta could not seem to get his game going as he fell, 6-1.
Retta will play in the consolation bracket on Saturday as he tries to remain in the tournament.
Play will resume Saturday morning as singles action gets into full swing.
