ATLANTA - The Vanderbilt men's tennis team concluded the first day of competition at the Georgia Tech Classic on Friday. Three Commodores are still alive in singles play while one doubles pair advanced in their flight.
In singles Flight 1, Bryant Salcedo defeated Vincent Verpeaux of Georgia State, 6-2, 6-2, in the first round, but fell to Georgia's Hernus Pieters, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. Adam Baker had a bye in the first round and defeated Clemson's Cal Hilsman to advance to the third round on Sunday morning. Alex DiValerio will face Hanno Bartsch in the third round after defeating Felipe Nino of Louisville, 6-1, 6-0, in the second round. DiValerio had a bye in the first round of competition. Charlie Jones fell to Mikk Irdoja, 6-3, 6-4.
In Flight 2, Blake Bazarnik defeated Matt Langley of Middle Tennessee State, 7-5, 6-2, and will face Chris Heiliar of UAB on Sunday morning. Andy Pulido fell to Winthrop's Dejon Bivens, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1.
In doubles play, DiValerio and Salcedo had a bye in the first round and then defeated the Atlantic Armstrong duo of Matus Mydla and Pedro Scocugla, 8-4, in the second round. Bazarnik and Zotov fell to Tom Puetz and David Zimmerman of UAB, 8-5, and the duo of Baker and Jones fell to Tennessee's Taylor Patrick and Bryan Swartz, 9-8(4-4).
The tournament resumes play on Sunday morning. Results will be posted on vucommodores.com.
