2017 semifinalist and number-two ranked Vanderbilt Men’s Golf begins their season this upcoming weekend at the Carmel Cup, an eight-team collegiate event at Pebble Beach Golf Links on the Monterrey Peninsula in California. The event, which begins at 7 a.m. Pacific on Friday and Saturday and at 7:10 a.m. Sunday, is the seventh annual edition of the tournament.
Vanderbilt returns four letter winners who have all been named All-Americans at some point in their career - senior Theo Humphrey, juniors Will Gordon and Patrick Martin, and sophomore John Augenstein. Competing with those four this weekend will be sophomore Andrew Jacobe and freshman Luke Zieman.
“The beginning of any journey is always so fun and for us to be able to do it once again at Pebble Beach is special,” said 2017 GCAA National Coach of the Year Scott Limbaugh, who is entering his sixth season with the Commodores. “Our guys are always so excited to be able to compete at a course with so much history. I want our guys to really be thankful and appreciative of having opportunities like this.”
The Commodores will be joined by Arkansas, Georgia, Ohio State, defending national champion Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, TCU, and Texas Tech. Oklahoma State enters the 2017-18 season as the number one team in the country, followed by the Commodores at number two, and the Sooners in third. Other ranked teams in this week’s field include #22-ranked Texas Tech and #25-ranked Georgia.
“We are a new team that has to form a new identity,” said Limbaugh. “It’s going to be fun to see how the youth of this team matures and develops as the season progresses. I do know that early on I like the leadership that I see from some of our older guys, which is a positive sign. I think it’s very important for us to look to the future and the steps we need to take and not look to the past.”
