Senior Theo Humphrey is now one step closer to a U.S. Amateur title after knocking off Chun An Yu, 1-up, in his quarterfinal match at Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles, Calif., on Friday. Humphrey sealed the deal against Yu with a clutch seven-foot par putt on the 18th hole to advance to the semifinals and a match with Doug Ghim, a Southern California standout.
As has been the case for a majority of Humphrey’s matches this week, Friday’s match with Chun An Yu was a roller coaster ride, at least for the first 13 holes. Yu took an early two-hole lead through eight holes, but Humphrey responded, winning four of the next five holes to take a 1-up lead after 13.
From then on, the two battled all square, and on 18, needing a seven-foot putt to win the match, the senior from Greenwich, Conn., drained his par putt attempt to come away with the dramatic victory.
Humphrey is the second Vanderbilt golfer in the program’s history to advance to the U.S. Amateur semifinals. Former standout Luke List was runner-up in the 2004 U.S. Amateur.
Saturday’s match with Ghim begins at 10:00 a.m. Central time for Humphrey, with live coverage starting on Fox at 11 a.m. CT. Mark Lawrence and Doc Redman are set for the other semifinal.
