Senior Theo Humphrey defeated round of 64 opponent Brendon Jelley of Tulsa, Okla. on Wednesday at Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles, Calif., and will take on Kyle Mueller, who plays at the University of Michigan in the round of 32. Humphrey’s match with Mueller will begin at 7:55 a.m. Pacific time on Thursday.
Humphrey jumped out to an early lead in his match on Wednesday and never trailed against Jelley, who is a rising senior at Oklahoma State University. The senior from Greenwich, Conn., won three of his first four holes, but then dropped holes five and six to his lead fall to only one-up. After two all-square holes on seven and eight, Humphrey reeled off three straight wins to go 4-up through 11, a lead he would never relinquish.
Fellow Commodore Will Gordon, who was also competing in the round of 64, lost 3 & 1 to Travis Smyth of Australia on Wednesday.
Humphrey could play two matches Thursday - the round of 32 and 16 will both take place on Thursday, with the quarterfinals taking place on Friday. Play will continue with the semifinal round on Saturday and the 36-hole final on Sunday.
