Gator Todd named Vanderbilt men’s golf assistant coach

July 11, 2017

Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh has announced Marquette assistant coach and former Alabama standout Gator Todd as his new assistant coach on Friday.  Todd replaces Dusty Smith, who was named as Mississippi State’s new head coach in June, and will assume his duties with the Commodores immediately.

"I'm honored to begin working with Coach Limbaugh and be a part of the Vanderbilt Golf family,” said Todd.  “Playing for Coach Limbaugh and now getting the opportunity to work for him at the number one golf program in the country is a dream come true.  It's a tremendous opportunity to work at an institution as great as Vanderbilt.  I can't wait to get to work.  Anchor Down!”

Todd comes to Vanderbilt after spending one season at Marquette, where the Golden Eagles captured the Big East Championship in 2017, and along with Golden Eagle head coach Steve Bailey, was named the Big East Coaching Staff of the Year.  Todd coached All-Big East players in Oliver Farrell and Matt Murlick, as well as Big East Freshman of the Year Matthew Bachmann.

"We are so thrilled to have Gator join our Vandy Golf family as assistant coach,” said Limbaugh. “Having coached him during his college career, I know the kind of person and competitor that he is. He brings a great deal of playing experience and he can relate very well to our guys. Gator is a high character guy that will continue to help us build our program."

Todd’s golf career includes playing experience on the Web.com Tour, NGA Tour and E Golf Tours, with Todd earning Web.com Tour membership in 2012.  His career highlights include advancing to the Final Stage of the 2011 PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament, three professional career second-place finishes, and a low professional round of 63.  Todd was the 2017 U.S. Open Local Qualifying medalist (5-under-par) in May of 2017 at The Bull in Sheboygan Falls.

While playing, Todd experienced high-level instruction for five years (2010-15) at the Sea Island Golf Performance Center (GPC) in St. Simons Island, Georgia under world-renowned and PGA award-winning instructors Todd Anderson and Randy Myers.  GPC is used by numerous professional tour players, including past major champions Stewart Cink, Lucas Glover, Zach Johnson, Justin Leonard and Davis Love III.

A four-year letterman at Alabama, Todd played in 43 tournaments during his Crimson Tide career while logging 130 total rounds with a 73.55 scoring average. A 2007 All-SEC performer, Todd played in the 2005 and 2007 NCAA Championships. He posted 11 career top 10 finishes and five times placed in the top five. Todd fired 22 rounds under par at Alabama and finished five tournaments under par as well.  In Todd’s senior season (2008), the Tide earned their first-ever season-ending No. 1 ranking.

Todd is a native of Florence, Alabama, where he was a high school state champion and junior golf All-American at Coffee High School.
