The Commodore men's golf team heads to their toughest test of the season this Friday through Sunday at the SEC Men's Golf Championship in St. Simons Island, Ga., at the Sea Island Golf Club's Seaside Course. The Seaside Course, which will be played as a par-70, 6,898-yard format, is home to the PGA Tour's McGladrey Classic.
"The SEC Championship is always a great tournament and Sea Island is a special place," said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh, who will be competing in his first SEC Championship as the head coach of the Commodores after winning two SEC crowns as an assistant at Alabama. "The fact that we have it at the same location every year is really cool. I don't remember a year when the conference has had this many highly ranked teams so it will certainly be a great challenge."
The field, which has grown to 14 teams with the addition of Texas A&M and Missouri, features nine of the nation's top 25 teams, and 12 in the top 40, and will be Vanderbilt's stiffest test of the season. The Commodores, ranked 36th in the latest Golfstat.com rankings, have had their most successful season in history, winning three team tournaments and runner-up finishes in two others.
The Commodores are led by sophomore Hunter Stewart, who has a stroke average of 73.14 and has had five top 10 finishes this season and one individual championship at the Samford Intercollegiate this spring. Stewart will be joined at the SEC Championship by junior Charlie Ewing, fellow sophomores Ben Fogler and Jordan Janico, and freshman Zack Jaworski.
"We have had a good week of preparation and are excited to play," said Limbaugh. "Our focus has to be on us and controlling the things we can control. Postseason golf is about trusting each other, demanding more from each other, and committing to the small details of a game plan and executing that plan."
Vanderbilt finished ninth at the 2012 SEC Championship, and posted its best finish in 2004 when the Commodores finished in fourth place.
