ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Two Vanderbilt men's golfers finished in the Top 10 Sunday at the 82nd-annual New Year's Invitational at the St. Petersburg Country Club.
Sophomore Hudson Johnson finished in a tie for third place in the 117-player field. Johnson held at least a share of the lead for each of the first three rounds before being overtaken on Sunday.
On Saturday, Johnson's five-under 67 matched the tournament's low round. Johnson finished the tournament at five-under, tied with Florida's Will Strickler.
Junior Jon Curran shot a three-under 69 Sunday to finish in sole possession of seventh place. Curran shot no worse than one-over in any of his four rounds and finished the tournament at two-under.
Two other Commodores also competed in the impressive field at the south's oldest amateur tournament. Senior Billy Whalen finished in a tie for 28th place at eight-over (296). Senior John Ebert shot a three-over 75 on Sunday and finished the tournament in a tie for 65th place.
Sunday's results helped continue Vanderbilt's legacy of success at the New Year's Invitational. Former VU All-American Luke List and Brandt Snedeker both won the event in previous years.
Head Coach Tom Shaw's Commodores return to campus this week and will open the 2008 Spring season in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., at the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational (Feb. 17-19).
