The Commodores' men's golf team claimed their second tournament title this fall season with a nine-stroke victory at the Arkansas State University Fall Classic in Gulf Shores, Ala., on Tuesday. Vanderbilt fired a final round total of 293, the day's best score, to win the team title over Murray State and Arkansas-Little Rock. The Commodores finished with a team score of 882 (289-300-293).
The win capped a great fall season for first-year Vanderbilt mentor Scott Limbaugh, as the Commodores won two of their four team tournaments this fall, and finished second in another.
"I'm really pleased with how the guys competed today," said Limbaugh. "I challenged them last night to be more resilient and not accept being average. We were certainly more disciplined and focused today. We finished strong today as a team in windy conditions and to finish the fall with a win is rewarding for these guys. They are working extremely hard and we learned a valuable lesson yesterday afternoon and that is that we have to play to our standard every single day.
"Winning is never easy and it certainly wasn't this week. I'm happy for the guys as its a great way to head into the offseason."
The Commodores had three players finish in the top 10 for the tournament, with sophomore Ben Fogler leading the way with a third-place finish and a total of 217 (69-76-72). Junior Charlie Ewing finished fifth with a total of 220 (72-74-74), and sophomore Hunter Stewart ended the tournament in a tie for seventh (73-76-73).
"Ben had a really solid week and he continues to get better," said Limbaugh. "Charlie was solid all week from start to finish and Stewy hung in there all day. We had all five guys competing all day and I love that."
Alfred Kerstis of Arkansas-Little Rock and Tolver Dozier of Troy tied for medalist honors with a 214.
The Commodores' fall season is complete after Tuesday's win, and Vanderbilt returns to the course February 18-19 at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate.
