`Dores finish 4th at Hummingbird
Nov. 1, 2011 Vanderbilt freshman Hunter Stewart had the best finish of his young college career on Tuesday at the Hummingbird Intercollegiate in Cashiers, N.C., when he ended the tournament in a tie for fourth with a total of 139 (68-71). As a team, the Commodores finished in fourth place with a 36-hole total of 574 (291-283). Stewart fired an even-par 71 in his final round, and sophomore Charlie Ewing fired the best round and finish of his collegiate career with a two-under 69 at the Country Club of Sapphire Valley on Tuesday. Ewing finished the tournament in a tie for seventh. "Hunter Stewart played well the last couple of days, and tt was a breakthrough for Charlie," said Vanderbilt head coach Tom Shaw. "They both made up for a bad round that we had yesterday. We were just better doing everything today. We finished poorly on Monday, but today we were motivated for a good finish. "The greens were fast, and we had a little bit of altitude, but the weather was colder. You have to make adjustments, and we did that, especially our younger guys." Senior Trey DelGreco shot a one-under par, 70, on Tuesday, and the Commodores also counted a 73 from senior Adam Hofmann in their final round. Appalachian State stormed from the back of the pack to win the team title with a final score of 565 (292-273). Their 273 on Tuesday set a new Hummingbird record. Kristopher Gray of Gardner Web claimed medalist honors with a seven-under par, 135 (67-68), two strokes better than Paul Dunne of UAB, who finished in second. The Hummingbird Intercollegiate concluded the Commodores' final tournament of the fall. Vanderbilt returns to the course February 20-21, 2012, at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate. 4.
