Dores finish Carmel Cup in 4th

Sept. 3, 2017

Final Results

The Vanderbilt men’s golf team finished the seventh annual Carmel Cup in fourth place with a final total of 27-under par, 1053 (357-343-353) and placed four individuals in the top 20 in the individual standings and three in the top 10 at the world famous Pebble Beach Golf Links.  Junior Patrick Martin led the way for the Commodores with three rounds in the 60’s and a final total of 204 (69-67-68) to finish in a tie for fourth.

Two other Vanderbilt players, junior Will Gordon and sophomore John Augenstein, finished in a tie for sixth with a score of 205, while Theo Humphrey, who posted a Sunday score of 68, ended the tournament in a tie for 18th with a score of 211.  Other scores for Vanderbilt over the weekend were freshman Luke Zieman, who carded a 230, and sophomore Andrew Jacobe, who finished with a 232.

"Today was probably the toughest of the three days,” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh.  “We had a chance to have a really good round, but didn't finish as well as we needed to as a team. It was good to see Theo play a solid round. Also, I am proud of the consistency we saw from Patrick, Will, and John this week. I thought they really played very well."

Oklahoma State led wire-to-wire to claim the team title with a 52-under par, 1028 total, 14 shots better than second-place Texas Tech.  The Red Raiders’ Hurly Long and the Cowboys’ Hayden Wood led all individuals with a final score of 19-under par, 197, with Long winning medalist honors after defeating Wood on the first playoff hole.

“The first tournament of the year is good because it shows you where you are as a team,” said Limbaugh.  “We did a lot of really good things this week which is very encouraging going forward. However, we have a lot of improvement and growing to do if we want to be the best team we can be. That goes for players and coaches alike. I want our guys to be excited and embrace our climb."

Vanderbilt returns to the course September September 16 and 17 in Durham, N.C., at the Rod Myers Invitational.
