Vanderbilt senior Hunter Stewart carded a first-round 67 in the first round of the Carmel Cup at the Pebble Beach Golf Links and is in a tie for first on the individual leader board with Lee McCoy of Georgia, who also stands at five-under par. As a team, the Commodores are in eighth position after posting a five-person team total of 364.
The Lexington, Ky., native fired an even-par 36 on his front nine, but picked up steam on the back, birdieing five holes, including his final three to finish his final nine holes with a 31. For the day, Stewart had seven birdies around the historic Pebble Beach track.
"Hunter did what great players do," said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh. "He stayed patient and trusted that good things would happen and they did. His round was really good and five-under on the back nine was special today."
Other counting scores for Vanderbilt on Friday were a pair of 73's from seniors Ben Fogler and Jordan Janico, a 75 from junior Carson Jacobs, and a pair of 76's from Theo Humphrey and Zack Jaworski.
"I thought we did a nice job getting off to a solid start," said Limbaugh. "We just didn't look as sharp as we need to and I thought we didn't do some simple things well. However, I saw a lot of good things in how we competed for all 18 holes. The guys will be excited to play tomorrow and we need to be a little more consistent in doing the things we need to do to play better."
Georgia leads the eight-team field with a first-round total of 352, three strokes better second-place Texas Tech.
The second round of the Carmel Cup will take place at Pebble Beach on Saturday.
