STILLWATER, Okla. -- The Vanderbilt men's golf team has a team total of one-under par after a rain-delayed start to the first round of the NCAA Championship in Stillwater, Okla. forced the Commodores to end their round early due to darkness on Friday. Vanderbilt, who has completed 13 to 16 holes as a team, is tied for sixth with Clemson and will complete their first round at 7 a.m. CT Saturday morning.
The Commodores, originally slated to begin their round at 12:42 p.m., did not begin until 4:02 p.m. after a 2 hour and 20 minute delay to the start of play because of inclement weather. Teams playing in the morning endured another hour delay later in their round, which forced teams playing in the afternoon to begin their round even later in the day.
Vanderbilt was led by senior Theo Humphrey and sophomore John Augenstein, who carded two-under par rounds, respectively, with Humphrey playing 13 holes and Augenstein 16 on Friday. Redshirt freshman Mason Greenberg is even-par through 16, junior Will Gordon is three-over par through 14, and junior Patrick Martin is four-over par through 15.
Northwestern leads all teams after finishing with an eight-under par, 280 total. The Wildcats caught fire on their last hole, making three birdies and two eagles on the par-5, 575-yard 18th. Vanderbilt trails fifth-place Texas by one shot, host and fourth-place Oklahoma State by two shots, third-place Texas Tech by three, and second-place Oklahoma by four shots. All five of those teams have yet to finish their first round.
The first round will continue Saturday morning at 7 a.m. CT, with the second round beginning at 8 a.m. The Commodores are slated to begin their second round at 8:22 a.m. CT off of the number 10 tee.
