Shurmur earns statewide honor

Nov. 28, 2017

NASHVILLE – Quarterback Kyle Shurmur became a repeat recipient of Tennessee Sportwriters Association Offensive Player of the Week honors after his sensational performance in Vanderbilt’s 42-24 road victory over Tennessee last Saturday.

The junior signal caller earned the state’s top weekly offensive honor after throwing for four touchdowns in the Commodores’ second consecutive win over Tennessee.

It was Shurmur’s second recognition this year by the sportwriters. He was honored in September after another four-touchdown passing effort in Vanderbilt’s victory over Alabama A&M on Sept. 9.

Shurmur completed 20-of-31 passes for 283 yards against Tennessee, leading the Commodores to touchdowns on their first three possessions and a 21-14 halftime lead that they never relinquished.

Shurmur provided the Commodores with their first score, connecting with senior receiver C.J. Duncan for a nine-yard touchdown in the first quarter. In the second quarter, he tossed a 30-yard scoring strike to sophomore receiver Kalija Lipscomb. After intermission, Shurmur helped seal the win adding touchdown passes of 20 and 12-yards to senior receiver Trent Sherfield.

In his career, Shurmur has been exceptional against the Volunteers. In three appearances, he has completed 56-of-99 passes for 908 yards and nine touchdowns.

A product of Philadelphia, Pa., Shurmur established a new Vanderbilt single-season record with the touchdown to Duncan, his 23rd of the season. He finished the season with 26 touchdown passes, second among all SEC quarterbacks.

It also marked Shurmur’s third game this year with four touchdown passes. He previously accomplished the feat against Alabama A&M and South Carolina.

Shurmur concluded the year with a career-best 2,823 passing yards, the third highest single-season total in team history.

Shurmur continues to climb Vanderbilt’s all-time passing charts. He ranks fourth quarterbacks with 40 touchdown passes and fifth with 5,735 passing yards.
