Jordan Matthews needs four catches to set the all-time SEC record for receptions.
Nov. 18, 2013
Senior wide receiver Jordan Matthews has been named the SEC Offensive Player of the Week and is one of 10 semifinalists for the Biletnikoff Award.
Matthews helped Vanderbilt to a 22-6 win over Kentucky on Saturday catching a career-best 12 passes for 141 yards to cross the 1,000-yard mark for the second straight season. Matthews is now the only Commodore to record two 1,000-yard receiving seasons in his career. The senior from Madison, Ala. extended his streak to a SEC-leading 31 games with at least one catch and posted his SEC-record 16th career 100-yard receiving game.
This season Matthews has 83 catches for 1,076 yards this season and is now just three catches behind former Commodore Earl Bennett for the SEC career record in receptions with 233. Matthews already holds the SEC record for career receiving yards and owns school records in nearly every receiving category.
The Biletnikoff Award is annually given to the top collegiate wide receiver in the nation. Matthews is Vanderbilt's first semifinalist for the award since 2007 when Bennett made the final ten. Of the 10 semifinalists this season, three play in the SEC with Odell Beckham of LSU and Mike Evans of Texas A&M joining Matthews on the list.
The SEC weekly honor is the first for Matthews in his career. He becomes the third Commodore this season to be honored by the league joining Wesley Johnson (Offensive Lineman of the Week vs. Georgia) and Caleb Azubike (Defensive Lineman of the Week vs. Florida).
