Benoist, Stokes named District IV Academic Americans

Nov. 11, 2009

Linebackers Patrick Benoist and John Stokes are under consideration for ESPN The Magazine's Academic All-America team after their recent selection as District IV All-Americans.

Benoist, a senior from Southlake, Texas, and Stokes, a junior from Memphis, Tenn., were named to the district team last week by the vote of CoSIDA, an organization of college sports information directors.

ESPN The Magazine and CoSIDA will announce its Academic All-American Team on Nov. 24.

It marks the second straight year that Benoist and Stokes were recognized at the district level for their academic achievements.

Benoist, a second team All-Southeastern Conference performer in 2008, is having another outstanding season. He ranks second on the team behind Chris Marve with 39 solo tackles and 80 total tackles, and leads the Commodores with a pair of fumble recoveries. He also has 5.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 quarterback sacks and an interception while starting all 10 games this season.

Benoist is majoring in Economics from the College of Arts & Science. He carries a 3.45 GPA.

Returning from two offseason shoulder surgeries, Stokes has played significant minutes in every game this season, contributed as an outside linebacker and the team's primary long snapper. He also has two defensive starts. Stokes has 28 total tackles and one forced fumble.

Stokes is working toward a major in Medicine, Health and Society, and currently maintains a 3.79 GPA. Stokes also received early acceptance into Vanderbilt Medical School following his second year on campus. He expects to start medical school classes in 2011.
