Commodores collecting sports equipment at Georgia Game

Oct. 7, 2013

Vanderbilt athletics has partnered with the Sports Fund of the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee to announce "Play It Forward," a sporting goods drive in conjunction with the Commodores' football game against Georgia on October 19th. Fans are encouraged to bring new or gently used sporting equipment to the game where they will be collected by Vanderbilt student-athletes. All collected equipment will be distributed to non-profit youth sports organizations throughout Middle Tennessee that are in need.

Recommended equipment to donate includes:

  • Balls (for all sports)
  • Gloves
  • Bats
  • Cleats
  • Rackets
  • Lacrosse Sticks
  • Golf equipment
  • Hockey Sticks
All donated equipment must be clean and in usable condition. A collection point for equipment will be set-up outside of Gates 2 & 3 at Vanderbilt Stadium on game day. Fans that are unable to attend the game are still encouraged to bring sports equipment to the Vanderbilt ticket office the week of October 14 - 18.

"We are very excited about the opportunity to partner with the Sports Fund and the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee," Director of Sales and Marketing Steve Walsh said. "In the past, Commodore fans have stepped up and assisted others in the community and we have no doubt that will continue with our sport equipment drive."

The Sports Fund, an initiative of The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee, is a charitable effort dedicated to helping ensure Middle Tennessee area children have access to the opportunities sports and team membership provide - ultimately, helping them succeed in school and in life.

"When we watch the Commodores take the field we are looking at individuals who wouldn't be where they are without having learned life skills from coaches. Nobody teaches the value of hard work, discipline, `gutting it out,' and interpersonal responsibility better than coaches. That in a nutshell is the opportunity The Sports Fund is providing to girls and boys across Middle Tennessee," said Ellen Lehman, president of The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee. "We are grateful to Vanderbilt for hosting The Sports Fund for our `Play It Forward' equipment drive. The Commodores are helping us secure the future of these kids and our community."
