Wright added to Bednarik list

Oct. 6, 2017

Vanderbilt outside linebacker Charles Wright is among 20 defensive standouts across the nation added to the Bednarik Award watch list.

The Bednarik Award has been awarded to the nation's outstanding defensive player annually since 1995 by the Maxwell Football Club.

A product of Beckman High School in Irvine, Calif., Wright has been one of college football's break-through defenders this season. He leads the Southeastern Conference and ranks fourth nationally with six quarterback sacks. Wright also ranks second in the league with seven tackles for loss.

The redshirt junior has made the most of his first year as a Commodore starter. In his initial start, the redshirt junior contributed three sacks among four tackles in Vanderbilt's season-opening victory at Middle Tennessee. He later contributed a pair of sacks in the team's Sept. 16 victory over No. 18 Kansas State.

Wright becomes the second Commodore defensive player under consideration for postseason honors. Fellow linebacker Oren Burks was named to the Butkus Award watch list in July.

Semifinalists for the Bednarik Award will be announced Oct. 30, with three finalists for the award being named on Nov. 30. The Bednarik Award recipient will be announced Dec. 7 at the Home Depot College Football Awards Show in Atlanta.

Formal presentation of the Bednarik Award will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala hosted by Tropicana Hotel & Casino Atlantic City on March 9, 2018.
