Vanderbilt Football Post-Game Notes: Game One Vanderbilt at Michigan -- Ann Arbor, Mich. -- Sept. 2, 2006
PRE-GAME NOTES Junior defensive tackle Theo Horrocks and redshirt sophomore quarterback Chris Nickson were responsible for carrying the anchor to and from the game… A pair of Commodores overcoming serious injuries opened the game... Sophomore kicker Bryant Hahnfeldt returned to action eight months after undergoing knee surgery, handling kickoff and placekicking duties… Junior tailback Cassen Jackson-Garrison started the game only 18 days after having an appendectomy… Junior tailback Jeff Jennings, also recovering from off-season knee surgery, dressed for the game but did not play… Senior offensive tackle Brian Stamper and redshirt junior linebacker Jonathan Goff served as team captains… Goff wore a "1" patch on his jersey in honor of Kwane Doster, who was tragically killed in December of 2004.
IN-GAME NOTES With VU down by 10 points with 13:48 in the second quarter, redshirt junior Jonathan Goff blocked a 42-yard field goal attempt. It was the first time since Sept. 14, 2002, when Justin Giboney blocked a field goal against Auburn…At the 12:33 mark of the second quarter, Nickson found redshirt sophomore receiver Sean Walker for his first career completion -- an 11-yard completion for a first down. On the next play, Nickson lateralled to sophomore receiver Earl Bennett who then threw a touchdown pass to senior Marlon White. It was the first career pass for Bennett and the team-high 12th touchdown reception of White's career… With just over eight minutes to go in the second quarter, redshirt freshman defensive end Broderick Stewart registered his first career sack -- a nine-yard loss that put the Wolverines in a 3rd-and-long situation… With 2:32 remaining before the half, a tackle by junior defensive end Curtis Gatewood resulted in a Michigan fumble (no FF) that was recovered by junior defensive tackle Theo Horrocks (first career) to give Vanderbilt the ball on their 19-yard line… The third quarter ended with the first carry of Jared Hawkins' career, a seven-yard rush on an option play.

TRUE FRESHMEN Placekicker Bryant Hahnfeldt and wide receiver Earl Bennett were the only true freshmen that found themselves on the field during the 2005 season… True freshmen D.J. Moore and Brent Trice covered the opening kickoff, matching last season's total of two… In all, Bobby Johnson played six true freshmen today. POST-GAME NOTES Junior linebacker Jonathan Goff posted a team-high 14 tackles, including 12 solo stops… Along with the sack by Stewart, tackles for loss were recorded by Curtis Gatewood, Kevin Joyce and Reshard Langford… Defensive backs Josh Allen and Darlron Spead were each credited with pass breakups… Wide out Earl Bennett led the Commodores in receptions and receiving yards (6-58), continuing the impressive numbers he posted during his true freshman season in 2005… The announced attendance of 109,668 marks the largest crowd that Vanderbilt has ever played before… A pair of redshirt freshmen linebackers, Brandon Bryant and Quavian Lewis, did not make the trip due to a violation of team rules.
