Welch on football:

What's your favorite thing about playing tackle?

I would say the best part is getting to play for Coach Robbie Caldwell actually. He's been coaching forever. He's one of the best coaches I've ever been around. It's just really exciting to know whenever you miss a block or something he knows exactly why, and how you need to correct that.

You were a QB in high school, TE as a VU freshman, now you're on the O-line. How's that transition gone for you?

It's actually been relatively smooth, I guess, as it can be. I dislocated my shoulder my senior year of high school, so I played tight end. Then I came here and I played tight end for a year and a half, and I put some weight on because we weren't very deep at offensive line. I just kept working with Coach John Sisk and the strength staff and Coach Caldwell. Now it's paying off.

Which of those three positions have you enjoyed the most?

Being a quarterback is pretty easy, well not easy, not game week easy, but practice is definitely a lot easier as a quarterback. So, that was fun, and also it was in high school so that was a lot of fun. I kind of liked tight end a lot because I liked to get the ball sometimes, and I really like blocking a lot. It's been a lot of fun everywhere actually.

You've moved from two positions where you got to handle the ball. Now that you're a lineman, what is your motivation for competing?

It's obviously different because I don't get to handle the ball, but now instead of wanting to make a big catch or a big throw or something it's really trying to make that big block so that running back can run off of you. When you do that and when you pancake somebody it feels just as good as making a big catch actually.

What game are you most looking forward to this season? Why?

I'm really looking forward to the South Carolina game actually. I know Miami of Ohio is going to be a tough game and it's going to be a lot of fun, Thursday night and everything, but the South Carolina game is something that... I don't know. I just think they're going to be really ready to play and it's going to be Thursday night at home. It's going to be a lot of fun. I'm excited.

What do you bring to the field/your best asset?

I think my athleticism as a tackle has helped me out tremendously, because even though I can make some technique errors during a play, I can use my athleticism to get right back on that block sometimes. I think that's just helped out, and being a tight end I knew offense a little differently than the offensive linemen do. So, I know sometimes what the receivers are doing and what the tight ends are doing. So, it helps me out knowing the offense and what the defense is going to do.

What's your favorite uniform combination?

I really like the black-on-black, especially during the night games. It's so much fun wearing that black-on-black. I think that looks the best. It's my favorite.

Off the field:

You're a hometown athlete. What's it like playing here? What's it like going to school so close to home?

It's a lot of fun. It's kind of hard to get a lot of tickets though, but it's a lot of fun because all of my friends from high school, most of them go to MTSU or Tennessee or something like that, so they get to come to a lot of games. My family always comes to every game. It's just really exciting. That's probably one of the biggest reasons why I came here, so I could be close, and I really enjoy it.

What's your favorite thing about Vanderbilt/Nashville: If you've never been to the Country Music Hall of Fame, I went there a couple of years ago with some of my buddies, and I thought that was really, really enjoyable. There's a lot of good restaurants around here, of course I like to eat so.

What's your favorite restaurant?

It has to be Ruth's Chris. Yeah, I'm going to have to go with that one.

You're an economics major. Why did you pick economics?

I really don't know what I'd like to do if football doesn't work out, probably something in that area of business or something. I'm not really sure why I chose economics, but it's enjoyable to me. It's really tough, but I enjoy it; and I'm not sure, whatever comes my way after college.

Have you had a favorite class at Vanderbilt?

I took a history of country music class, and that's when we got to go to the Country Music Hall of Fame. That was probably my favorite class since I've been here, with professor Lovensheimer. He was awesome. It was a great class.

Favorite type of music/artist: I listen to all sorts of stuff. I like a lot of rock and country and some rap. I don't even know who my favorite artist is. I listen to such a variety. I don't really have a favorite artist.

Favorite NFL team: Titans. Why? When I first moved here I'm pretty sure it was their first year as being the Titans, and they went to the Super Bowl that year. So, I kind of just fell into it. I really like the Titans.

What do you do in your free time: When I'm not here I usually like lying around on the couch just watching TV, doing something.

Best summer blockbuster: Well, we've been in camp most of summer. I actually went to see "Pineapple Express" last weekend. That was really funny. "Superbad" was extremely funny too. I'm not sure. They were both really good.
