Hamilton Holliday enters 2007 as a second year starter at center, one of five seniors likely to start for the Commodores on the offensive line. Coming off a solid junior campaign, Holliday is one of the SEC's most experienced centers. He is also a standout off the field, having earned Second Team District IV Academic All-American recognition as an engineering undergraduate.
How has your summer been?
I have an internship during the day, workouts in the afternoon, and relax during the night. I'll hang out with teammates during the nights and weekends. I also like to play golf when I get the opportunity.
Talk about your golf game?
I try to play as much as I can. It makes it easier to play since I live next to a course. Just recently some teammates and I started playing regularly.
Who are some of the better golfers on the team?
Merritt (Kirchoffer) is about even with me, maybe a little better. Plus Josh (Eames) is decent. Bryant Anderson is really good, too.
What kind of internship are you doing?
I've been working with an engineering firm in Nashville. My major is in engineering science, so it's definitely something I am interested in when I finish school. The internship is giving me a lot of hands-on, real world experience.
How are things different since your freshman year?
I feel people look up to me now. Coming in as a freshman, it was kind of intimidating. Now, I know just about everyone on the team and am comfortable with the environment.
What does it mean to you to be a team leader?
We have a lot of great leaders on our team. I know to be a leader, I have to set a good example for our younger guys and encourage them to succeed just like our coaches encourage us.
Talk about the overall experience coming back on the offensive line this season?
On the offensive line, it's very important to know the person next to you. We must be on the same page to be successful. Having that experience of playing together is beneficial because we're aware of each other's game tendencies. You're able to understand how everyone performs, which makes it easier to adjust. It really becomes second nature with experience.
How do you prepare yourself mentally for battling in the trenches?
I am very serious about it. One of the differences between when I was in high school and college is that I have become a lot more relaxed on the field. If you get too uptight, you'll forget what you're suppose to do. I know I will be successful physically if I just try my best and relax. Sometimes we like to tell jokes to keep everyone loose. Football is so much more of a mental game. You must take care of things mentally to perform physically.
How do you guys get along off the field?
We have a great bunch of guys. Everyone gets along on and off the field. On Tuesday nights in the off-season, we get together and go bowling. We try to spend a lot of time together, which helps build team chemistry.
Favorite movie of the summer?
I'm waiting for 300 to come out on DVD. I did see Transformers in the theatre and enjoyed the special effects.
How about the music you like to listen to?
I'm a big fan of the new country music that's out. Dierks Bentley is one of my favorite artists.
How excited are you to get the season started?
I'm very excited to get the season started. I'm going to try to enjoy my last few days of down time. I plan to come to camp prepared and am ready to get back on the field.
