The Vanderbilt Football program, in conjunction with the Southeastern Conference, has announced which players will join Head Coach James Franklin for the league's annual Football Media Days.
Cornerback Andre Hal, offensive tackle Wesley Johnson and wide receiver Jordan Matthews will accompany Franklin for the event, which runs July 16-18 in Hoover, Ala. The trio of seniors and Franklin will participate on the final day, Thursday, July 18, along with LSU, Georgia and Alabama.
Hal has been named to the preseason watch list for the Bednarik Award (Defensive Player of the Year) and is also a nominee for the Jim Thorpe Award (Defensive Back of the Year). The Port Allen, La., native was second among SEC defensive backs in 2012 with 16 passes defended. He recorded three in wins at Ole Miss, at Missouri and versus NC State in the Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl. He also had a pair of interceptions in Vanderbilt's 41-18 win over Tennessee.
Johnson (Nashville, Tenn.) is a nominee for both the Outland Trophy (Best Interior Lineman) and Rotary Lombardi Award (Best Lineman). He has started all 38 games of his Vanderbilt career, at four different positions on the offensive line and has never been called for holding. Last season, he did not allow snack, while for his career he is averaging one sack per 157.6 snaps.
Matthews is on the Maxwell Award (Player of the Year) watch list and is a nominee for the Biletnikoff Award (Best Wide Receiver). A native of Madison, Ala., the senior was consensus First Team All-SEC in 2012 after setting a school record with 1,323 receiving yards. That total also ranks as the fifth-most prolific season in SEC history. Those yards came on 94 catches, which was the second-most in league history. Matthews enters 2013 meeting 87 catches and 804 receiving yards to become the SEC's all-time leader in both categories.
This year's media days will again be held at the Hyatt Regency Birmingham - The Wynfrey Hotel. SEC Commissioner Mike Slive will kick off the three-day event on Tuesday, July 16, at 12:30 p.m. CT. Continuous coverage of SEC Football Media Days will be available at the SEC's official website, SECDigitalNetwork.com.
