On campus in Nashville - The Commodores continued to meet Derek Mason's practice standards Saturday, exhibiting plenty of energy, intensity and desire during the team's first full-gear session of the spring.

"I thought they practiced great today," Mason said. "They're starting to understand the expectation and they're working hard and competing at a high level. That's exactly what you want to see."

The squad spent much of the practice concentrating on proper fundamentals during a variety of position drills and extending a growing playbook. Mason limited contact in 11-on-11 segments, demanding that players stay off the ground.

The Commodores will return to the John Rich Practice Facility next week on Tuesday and Thursday, building toward the team's first spring scrimmage scheduled next Saturday, March 22. The scrimmage, which starts about 10 a.m. in Vanderbilt Stadium, is open to the public.

Several showing early "flashes"

Asked during the post-practice interview session to identify players who had caught his eye early in the spring, Mason said his answer would have a long list.

'Right now, they're getting after it pretty well. As a coach, you to see who flashes. Honestly, a lot of guys have showed flashes, both offensively and defensively. And as the coach, I can say that's a good thing," the coach added.

Squad getting more comfortable with practice routine, expectations

Mason praised his squad for their willingness to read the staff's practice expectations.

"These guys are getting it. They're looking to play fast and they're communicating," Mason said. "I'm not seeing a lot of guys who look lost on the field. If there's guys out here kind of swimming, we're not noticing it."

Dozens of high school coaches watch Commodores work

Nearly 50 prep coaches who participated in a two-day coaches' clinic hosted by the Vanderbilt staff would invited to watch the practice.
