2016
Cunningham enjoyed one of the most impressive and productive regular seasons by any defensive player in Vanderbilt history... In late November, Cunningham was named among five finalists for the Butkus Award, given annually to the nation's top linebacker... In October, he also was named as a semifinalist for the Chuck Bednarik Award, presented to college football's top defensive player... Cunningham finished the regular season as the Southeastern Conference with 119 total tackles (9.9 per game), ranking sixth nationally... Cunningham's 68 solo tackles ranks second among all SEC defenders... He also ranks among national leaders, and is tied for second in the SEC, with 16.5 tackles for loss... Additionally, Cunningham paces the SEC and ranks second nationally with four fumble recoveries... Cunningham earned National Defensive Player of the Week honors by virtually every outlet, including the Walter Camp Foundation, Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) and Maxwell Football Club after a remarkable 19-tackle performance in Vanderbilt's 17-16 road win at Georgia Oct. 15... The effort at Georgia featured a game-clinching tackle for no gain by Cunningham on 4th-and-1 in the closing minute of action... Cunningham closed the regular season with his second SEC Defensive Player of the Week recognition after posting 10 tackles, a forced fumble and fumble recovery in Vanderbilt's 45-34 win over Tennessee... Cunningham was superb against top competition, averaging 11.1 tackles against the Commodores' eight SEC opponents... Besides 19-tackle effort at Georgia, he has 14 stops vs. Florida, 12 tackles vs. South Carolina, and 10 tackles at Kentucky and Missouri in conference play... Registered 10 stops, including nine solo tackles, and a pair of tackles for loss, at Missouri Nov. 12... Contributed tackle for loss, fumble recovery and defensed pass in team's 38-17 win over Ole Miss Nov. 19 prior to season finale effort vs. Tennessee... Produced nine tackles, a fumble recovery and remarkable field goal block vs. nationally ranked Auburn Nov. 5... The block, featuring Cunningham hurdling the Auburn offensive front, was an ESPN TopTen play... Four outlets – Sporting News, SI.com, FoxSports.com and CBSSports.com – recognized Cunningham as a Midseason All-American in October... For his career, Cunningham ranks third all-time among 'Dores with 39.5 tackles for loss, and has amassed 279 tackles in 2+ years of action... Besides putting himself into contention for national honors Cunningham also is a serious candidate for SEC Defensive Player of the Year.
