Ricky Rahne, a former offensive assistant coach at Kansas State, will mentor Vanderbilt quarterbacks in 2011.
Rahne, who enjoyed a record-breaking collegiate career as quarterback at Cornell University, worked previously with Franklin at Kansas State during the 2006-07 seasons. Working together, Franklin and Rahne helped mentor talented Wildcat quarterback Josh Freeman into an eventual first-round NFL draft pick.
Rahne has been a full-time member of the Kansas State coaching staff for the last four years. He served as tight ends coach under legendary Wildcat head coach Bill Snyder the last two years, after mentoring Kansas State running backs coach in 2007-08.
In 2010, Rahne helped Kansas State secure a berth in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium after a 7-5 regular season. The Wildcat offense averaged 33.6 points per game, ranking 22nd in the nation, and produced nearly 200 rushing yards per game. The offense was also opportunistic, converting on 89 percent of its red-zone opportunities, ranking among the nation's Top 10 units in the category.
In 2009, Rahne tutored first team All-Big 12 tight end Jeron Mastrud, who ranks second in school history in receptions among tight ends. Mastrud was a two-time All-Big 12 pick at tight end and one of the most decorated players in school history in the classroom after being named a two-time Academic All-American and the recipient of the 2009 ARA Sportsmanship Award. The record-breaking tight end initially signed a free-agent contract with Tampa Bay, and is a current member of the Miami Dolphins.
Directing the Wildcat running backs from 2007-08, Rahne helped tutor All-Big 12 selection and current Pittsburgh Steeler James Johnson, who became the fastest Wildcat to rush for 1,000 yards in a season in 2007. The Wildcat rushing attack averaged 4.5 yards a carry in 2007, including a 6.4-yard average by Johnson.
Rahne served as the Wildcats' offensive graduate assistant during the 2006 season, working closely with all aspects of the Kansas State offense. He also worked hand-in-hand with Franklin with Wildcat quarterbacks, and specifically helped develop a young Freeman into the team's starting quarterback. Eventually, Freeman put together one of the greatest careers ever by a Kansas State signal caller and became a first-round draft pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Freeman just completed his second year as an NFL starter and is considered one of the league's future stars at quarterback.
Before joining the staff at Kansas State, Rahne spent the 2005 season as the running backs coach at Cornell, where he mentored first team All-Ivy League selection Luke Siwula. During 2005, Siwula had six 100-yard rushing games. He ended the year with 1,086 yards on the ground for the 10th-best single-season rushing total in Cornell history.
During the 2004 campaign, Rahne was a member of the coaching staff at Holy Cross, where he served as an assistant defensive line coach. In his only season with the Crusaders, Rahne worked extensively with the program's defensive ends. He was also responsible for all video breakdowns of opponents' defense and special teams, and assisted the defensive coordinator in developing game plans while coordinating scout teams.
A native of Morrison, Colo., Rahne finished his career as Cornell's all-time leader in nearly every passing category and earned the team's MVP honors three times.
A three-year starter, he remains the program's career leader in completions (678), yards (7,710), touchdown passes (54) and 200-yard passing games (25). He took over the top spot for total offense with 7,994 yards (7,710 passing, 284 rushing) during his senior season and finished his career ranked No. 3 in the Ivy League in career passing yards with 7,710 yards.
Rahne earned a bachelor's degree in industrial and labor relations from Cornell is 2002.
Rahne and his wife, Jennifer, are the parents of a son, Ryder.
