Since arriving in Nashville three months ago, Vanderbilt Head Coach Derek Mason has assembled one of the most impressive coaching staffs in the nation. Mason's Commodore coaches includes a former major college head coach, six former coordinators and three mentors coming directly from successful stints in the National Football League.
"Committed & Trained" is a video series that spotlights the personalities, coaching styles and accomplishments of each of Mason's nine assistant coaches. The productions include behind-the-scenes practice footage, student-athlete interviews and talks with each coach.

Karl Dorrell, Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks Coach BIO VIDEO
The relationship between Dorrell and Coach Mason goes back to Mason's undergraduate days at Northern Arizona when Dorrell served as the team's offensive coordinator.
David Kotulski, Defensive Coordinator/Inside Linebackers Coach BIO VIDEO
The relationship between Derek Mason and Kotulski dates nearly two decades. It was the veteran Kotulski who encouraged Mason to become a defensive coach and introduced him to the 3-4 defensive system.
Charles Bankins, Special Teams Coordinator/Running Backs Coach BIO VIDEO
Collectively, Bankins' special teams at Vanderbilt for the last three years have ranked among the SEC's elite, with both punters and kickers earning all-conference honors. Mentor for tight ends from 2011-13, Bankins moves over to coach Commodore running backs this year.
Frank Maile, Defensive Line Coach BIO VIDEO
As a Utah State undergraduate, Maile played defensive line for current Vanderbilt defensive coordinator David Kotulski. He comes to Derek Mason's Commodore staff off a successful tenure coaching defensive linemen at his alma mater, which is experiencing a resurgence similar to the Commodores. Maile is regarded as one of the nation's top young defensive line coaches.
Gerry Gdowski, Recruiting Coordinator/Tight Ends Coach BIO VIDEO
Gdowski, a former quarterback at Nebraska who played for legendary head coach Tom Osborne, comes to the Commodores after a stellar eight-year tenure at Ohio University. For the last three years, he has served as assistant head coach, co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He was an Academic All-American and received a postgraduate scholarship from the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame.
Kenwick Thompson, Outside Linebackers Coach BIO VIDEO
Thompson, the former San Jose State defensive coordinator, worked five years as a defensive coach in the Pac 12 Conference, serving as an associate head coach, recruiting coordinator and linebackers coach at the University of California under Jeff Tedford. The Golden Bears' 2011 topped the Pac 12 in total defense and pass defense.
Marc Lubick, Wide Receivers Coach BIO VIDEO
The son of legendary former Colorado State head coach Sonny Lubick, the Commodores' new receiver coach served with Vanderbilt offensive coordinator Karl Dorrell as an NFL offensive assistant with the Houston Texans for the last two years. While with the Texans, Lubick worked with future Hall of Famer Andre Johnson.
Keven Lightner, Offensive Line Coach BIO VIDEO
Lightner was at Ohio from 2006-13. As a player, Lightner was a standout for Tom Osborne at Nebraska, where he was an All-Big 8 performer.
Brett Maxie, Defensive Secondary Coach BIO VIDEO
Maxie comes to Mason's staff after nearly three decades as a standout safety and coach in the National Football League. Most recently, Maxie served as the Tennessee Titans' defensive backs coach from 2012-13, molding cornerbacks Alterraun Verner and Jason McCourty to breakout seasons.
